NEWS & EVENTS FROM ARGENTINA

Our 2012!  Our acclaimed winemaker, Santiago Achaval, has been busy monitoring veraison and the ripening process in the Úco Valley and Maipù in greater Mendoza.

“Up to now we’ve had what could be described as almost perfect weather in all our vineyards,” says Santiago. “We had good fruit set…bunches are loose and aerated. We had a hot summer, but not so hot as to provoke sunburn. So now we’re in the last final stretch of ripening. We’ve dropped fruit to concentrate flavors and aromas. There was a huge storm last week in Mendoza, and again: almost caught us but didn’t! So here we are: swerving around the almost, and on our way to the utmost!”

We expect to crush approximately 25 tons of Malbec and 16 tons of Syrah this year, along with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne and Sauvignon Blanc.  We’re looking forward to introducing some new varietal wines in upcoming vintages.

It’s the perfect time of year to vanish from the cold and visit Argentina! Stop in at our newly renovated tasting room in charming Chacras de Coria, located just outside the city of Mendoza. Our stylish tasting room & restaurant features our full lineup of HOG and Achàval Ferrer wines with alfresco dining options.

• Asado Sundays start Feb. 10.  What’s an asado? Asado: barbecue, prepared the Argentine way. An asado typically includes 2-3 types of traditional Argentine cuts of meat & sausages with peppers prepared over a wood fire. These are accompanied with a fresh tomato & onion salad, bread and wine, followed by sobremesa with family & friends.
• Asado Classes with Mendoza Wine Camp start Feb. 12.  Explore all the facets of wine from viticulture, the winemaking process, wine tasting and the art of food pairing.
• Celebrate Vendimia with Hand of God!  We’re offering a 4-course dinner paired with HOG wines from February 15 – March 15 at our tasting room. Vendimia, the largest festival in Mendoza, celebrates the grape harvest during the first weekend in March. Mendoza City and its surrounding villages overflow with locals and visitors enjoying traditional Argentine cuisine, folkloric song and dance, and the crowning of the ‘Queen of Vendimia’ in a local pageant while Malbec flows freely.

For more information about visiting our tasting room or to sign up for an asado class, please contact Angelo at 206.414.6627 (if you’re located in the States) or simply email tastingroom@handofgodwines.com.

Since the arrival of our inaugural release stateside, Hand of God Wines received popular reviews from customers, new wine club members, and people in the food and wine industry. If you haven’t heard, The Wine Advocate awarded our Old Vine Malbec 92 points! Here’s what Neal Martin had to say about our flagship wine:

“Raised entirely in new oak, it has an intense, heady bouquet with blackberry, peppermint, a touch of sous-bois and a slight fug of alcohol. The palate is full-bodied with layers of ripe black, tarry fruit. It is well-balanced and very harmonious. What could be overpowering is extremely refined and well-balanced towards the decadent finish...”

We’re thankful this exceptional wine didn’t go unnoticed by such an esteemed publication, but we encourage you to taste it for yourself and tell us what you think. Visit our new website www.handofgodwines.com to access our online store, join the Sobremesa Circle wine club, and try our wines! We always welcome your feedback.
Abrazo,
